Sustainability at Heriot’s

Sustainability Mission Statement

At George Heriot’s School we are committed to integrating sustainability into our culture, community, curriculum and campus.

We aim to achieve this by:

  • raising awareness of social and environmental stewardship;
  • empowering everyone to contribute towards a socially just and equitable world;
  • embedding the Sustainable Development Goals in learning and teaching;
  • becoming a net zero campus.

George Heriot’s School is delighted to have been recognized by the Eco-Schools Scotland Green Flag Award again in 2023. The Keep Scotland Beautiful team commented that ‘it was clear from your application that pupils are leading the choice of which topics and projects to work on. Your Action Plan is outstanding in its detail and you have done a huge amount of work on reducing waste and encouraging active travel. It is great to see you are participating in Terracycle’s pen recycling scheme.’

‘Your work on measuring is done very well, particularly how pupils had asked their peers their preferences for meals in the refectory in an effort to reduce food waste which has led to a greater variety of vegetarian meals being provided.’

‘The Earth group’s campaign for divestment from fossil fuels was amazing and a true accomplishment for S6 pupils.’
