At Heriot’s, there are many options and opportunities to shine. Sports enthusiasts compete at regional, national and international levels, yet our aim is for pupils to discover sports and activities they genuinely enjoy. We are very proud of all our pupil’s successes in and out of School. Callum is one example of how our pupils can excel in their field. Read his story below:
I started playing rugby in Primary 3 for Heriots Rugby Club Mini’s. The team was coached by dads, who were passionate about rugby and made me fall in love with the sport. I then started playing rugby for the School in Primary 5. In S1, the School put me forward for the Edinburgh Schools vs Prep Schools game, this was my first experience playing at a level higher than school rugby, which I thoroughly enjoyed. In S3, the School helped me to earn a place onto the Edinburgh Regional Programme. This involved trial games and training sessions, in which I was eventually selected to play for the U16 Edinburgh Team. My rugby career them escalated, and I began to play for Scotland U16s, and have since been a part of the U17 international squad.
One of my career highlights, so far, was being awarded Man of the Match during the U18 1872 Cup Game against Glasgow Warriors, whilst playing up an age group.
This summer, I was given an Academy Stage 2 contract, which means I benefit from more support e.g. physio, gym and nutritional advice. I played again for the Edinburgh Regional Team and was pleased to captain the side. Selection for the Scotland U18s squad is soon and I’m aiming to be a part of the final squad and to be able to play in the six nations, held in France in April.
