Frank Tollick’s (1950) rugby journey

We would like to present the rugby journey of former rugby captain and pupil Frank Tollick (1950), nearly 92 years old, who remains a devoted rugby fan.

‘These two Heriot’s school rugby caps were awarded to me, Frank Tollick, for the school years 1948-49 and 1949-1950. I was born in 1932 and grew up in north Edinburgh. I attended George Heriot’s School from the age of 7. In my 5th and 6th year at the senior school, I played regularly for the school team in the second row of the scrum, alongside John McGregor.

I was a member of the school Air Cadets and played for the Scottish Air Cadets rugby team against English and Welsh sides, playing alongside older boys in games which were faster and more abrasive than the usual school games.

After I left school, I trained at Edinburgh University as a civil engineer and worked for the Hydro Board for several years, before becoming a minister of the Church of Scotland. I worked in a rural parish in Fife and in an industrial parish on the river Clyde. I turned out regularly for Coatbridge Rugby Club for two seasons in my mid-20s. Later I re-trained as a teacher and taught in 2 secondary schools, where I also coached rugby sessions for junior boys.

I am now almost 92 years old and I still enjoy watching rugby matches on television and online.’
