F1 in Schools

Can the Scottish F1 champions create the world’s fastest car?

FI in Schools is a competition which seeks to develop a specialist understanding of science, technology. engineering and maths (STEM) disciplines in young people, wrapped in the wide appeal offered by F1. Supported by the F1 community, the competition pits school teams against one another to ultimately create the fastest race car, with points awarded for design, analysis, manufacture, test and race, CAD/CAM software and marketing skills. At senior levels this involves detailed work on 3D CAD/CAM and enterprise.

The Fibonacci team, current Senior Regional Champions for Scotland for F1 in Schools, comprises two pupils each from George Heriot’s School and James Gillespie’s High School in Edinburgh, working in collaboration. The team has already won the regional finals for Scotland, came fifth in the UK National finals, and is now preparing for the Schools World Final in July, contested by over 40 countries and run alongside the F1 Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The team (pictured) comprises Jess, Avinash, Kenneth and Matt, supported in their endeavour by physics teachers Dr Anderson from Gillespie’s and Mrs Rolland from Heriot’s.

As a new team, Fibonacci does not have funding. The team is looking for vital support to help them realise their dream and is hopeful a member of the Heriot’s community might step in.

The Fibonacci website provides information on funding requirements, especially essential track material to evolve the car design. The team also requires help to cover accommodation and travel costs to/from Silverstone, assuring safe transport of equipment.

Funding could also take the form of supplying incense sticks used in the wind tunnel to help map where air hits the car so designs can be streamlined, to providing £5,000 to fund essential racetrack.
