SSERC at George Heriot’s

The charity SSERC (Scottish Schools Education Research Centre) organised an online training CLPD event on Tuesday 1 October for teachers of Advanced Higher Biology.  The session aim was to provide a free-of-charge opportunity to reflect on learnings from the 2023-24 session, during which the Advanced Higher Biology course assessment task returned.

Four guest speakers were invited to present on specialist topics, including Heriot’s PT Biology, Ms Ann McKenzie who shared her insights based on 23 years’ teaching the current AH course. Over 160 schools signed up to participate in the workshop and initial feedback has been very positive.

Ms McKenzie commented: ‘this was an opportunity to reach a vast audience with the purpose of sharing ideas and practice which will ultimately support biology depts in many schools across the country, as they encounter their own unique, experience of the coursework task during session 2024-25’.

For Heriot’s, participating in a national level training event and ‘giving something back’ is very much part of the school’s external outreach strategy: I distribute chearfullie.

SSERC is a registered Scottish Charity set up for the benefit of Scottish Education. All 32 Scottish Local Authorities are members.
