S6 Captains’ Reflections

As we say farewell to our S6 cohort and welcome them with open arms in the former pupil community we shine a light on Heriot’s Captains and Vice-captains.

Amy and Tom are sharing their experience from their time at Heriot’s.

Amy (S6) – Captain

How was your everyday at Heriot’s?

Day-to-day life at Heriot’s includes a mix of the familiar and the unexpected. Although all days start the same with scheduled form classes where we can catch up with friends there is always the possibly to be involved in unexpected opportunities, volunteering, projects, and team activities making no 2 days at school the same.

What type of support and guidance do you receive when making plans for after school, i.e. work, travel, etc?

From early on in Senior School there is exposure to career advice which can be helpful in opening your eyes to the range of possibilities on offer after leaving school.

What were the most inspiring moments, you can think of, while being a Herioter?

I have always enjoyed seeing the successes of individual pupils and teams celebrated in regular assemblies and school’s social media, each of which is inspirational within themselves. What has been particularly inspiring for me this year however, has been the We Are All George Heriot 400-year campaign, seeing the whole school come together whether it be riding bikes, participating in concerts or running around the school, continuing to deliver on the founding principles that George Heriot set out for all of use.

Did you have any personal projects that teachers encourage you or help you achieve while at Heriot’s?

All teaching staff go above and beyond to make themselves available to pupils whatever their academic questions or needs might be. I know I have benefited massively from the maths helpline over the years.

Tom (S6) – Captain

How was your everyday life at Heriot’s?

Consistently enjoyable even during more stressful points in the calendar. I could always look forward to school or parts of every school day thanks to my great friends, and the community created by all these great people.

What type of support and guidance do you receive when making plans for after school?

There was regular information from careers and other departments on countless different options for the future. This was on top of external speakers who came in to suggest opportunities I might never have thought about whilst giving insight into their own lives.

What were the most inspiring moments, you can think of, while being a Herioter?

For me, it has to be the amazing trip to Kenya where I truly realised how lucky we are to be at Heriot’s, allowing me to reflect further on the effect I want to have on the wider world, outside my small bubble, both now and in years to come.
