S1 trip to Benmore

The September S1 residential trip to Benmore is an active learning experience designed to help pupils move smoothly into secondary school. It consolidates existing friendships while encouraging wider social interaction among peers beyond their immediate class groups. Through group-based challenges and outdoor activities, the trip supports the school’s House system, emphasizing pastoral care and promoting a sense of belonging. Pupils are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, knowing they are supported by peers, GHS staff and experienced instructors.

Skills developed include collaborative problem-solving, building confidence in an ‘away from home’ setting, developing personal responsibility and teamwork. As pupils take part in activities with a ‘give it a go’ mindset, they develop resilience and self-assurance. The trip  enables also teachers to connect with pupils in a non-academic setting, improving relationships and enhancing their understanding of individual needs.

Outdoor activities vary depending on the group and conditions, but pupils enjoyed climbing, abseiling, canoeing, kayaking, gorge walking, sailing, high ropes, cycling, and night walks. Evenings provided opportunities for social interaction through activities like discos, crafts and games.

The focus here is not on mastery of specific sports or skills but on personal growth, peer interaction and strengthening friendships. While these ‘soft’ skills are difficult to measure, the resulting confidence and sense of cohesion are evident and lasting.
