The Learning Enhancement (LE) team of qualified and experienced primary teachers delivers a programme which incorporates Resilience, Philosophical Enquiry and Diversity. All pupils from Nursery to Primary 7 take part in this unique and innovative curriculum, enabling the school to provide a learning experience unlike any other.

Philosophy
Heriot’s leads nationally in the teaching of Philosophy to children. In 2019, we became the only school in Scotland to achieve a Gold Award from Sapere, an organisation which recognises best practice in the teaching of philosophy. Since then, the school has been reaccredited with this award with Sapere stating ‘the 4Cs (Caring, Collaborative, Creative and Critical Thinking) is just a way of life at Heriot’s’.

Philosophy for Children is designed to open up conversations, nurturing critical, creative, collaborative and caring thought processes. It improves outcomes in literacy and numeracy and research from the Nuffield Foundation shows that the study of philosophy enhances communication skills, teamwork and resilience.

Resilience
Our Resilience programme helps pupils to understand their emotions and form positive relationships. Early Years pupils identify and relate to their emotions through games, stories and relaxation exercises. Middle Primary pupils explore strategies to resolve conflict with friends and, through lessons on mindfulness in nature, continue to build up their emotional toolkit by exploring strategies to help them to self-regulate. Upper Primary further develop their understanding of the brain, how hormones affect behaviour, learn to deal with negative emotions and thoughts and recognise the importance of self-care as part of their emotional toolkit.

Lessons are tailored to suit the age and stage of the child and each lesson incorporate mindfulness and self-regulation exercises in preparation for later life.  Regular discussions with staff, parents and the children themselves allow us to adapt our teaching to support the changing needs of pupils.

Diversity
Our bespoke Diversity curriculum encourages pupils to be aware of and celebrate the differences that surround us. Pupils learn that a person’s identify is not defined by their race, gender or disability. Heriot’s pupils accept and appreciate UNCRC Article 2 (non-discrimination) and aim to be an ally to show respect and mitigate against inequality.

Learning Enhancement is a unique offering at Heriot’s and the department is delighted to welcome visitors by appointment.
