Inspiring a lifelong love of sport and physical activity 

At Heriot’s, we believe sport and physical education are essential to every pupil’s journey — building confidence, supporting wellbeing, and developing the life skills that shape good people as well as great athletes. 

From Nursery right through to S6, all pupils benefit from high-quality PE and Games delivered by specialist teachers who know and support them every step of the way. Whether your child is just discovering what they enjoy or aiming to compete at the highest level, they’ll find opportunities to thrive here. 

Sport for Everyone 

We place great value on participation, enjoyment and discovery. Our broad PE and Games programmes encourage pupils to try a wide range of sports and activities, helping them find what they love and providing opportunities to shine. 

Games options include: 

• Traditional team sports: Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Football, Lacrosse 

• Individual pursuits: Athletics, Tennis, Rowing, Golf, Climbing 

• Wellbeing-focused activities: Pilates, Yoga, Fitness, Dance 

• Outdoor and adventure skills, including Sailing. 

Pupils begin using our Goldenacre sports ground from Primary 5, with regular Saturday fixtures, and many go on to represent Heriot’s at local, regional, and national level. 

Evolving PE and Sporting Journey 

From Junior School to Senior 6, sport and PE evolve with your young person: 

• In Junior School, all pupils enjoy regular PE as part of the curriculum. From P5, they participate in Games afternoons, introducing them to seasonal sports and their first opportunities for competitive fixtures. 

• In Senior School, the range expands further. Pupils can specialise, try new sports, or continue to explore a mix of team and individual activities. Games remains a core part of the timetable until S6. 

• Senior pupils can also choose PE as a certificated subject (National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher) or explore vocational routes through coaching and leadership roles within the school. 

Supporting Success and Wellbeing 

Our dedicated PE department teaches across all year groups, building strong relationships and providing tailored support. We aim to develop not just sporting ability, but the resilience, teamwork, leadership, and emotional intelligence that come with it.

• Guest speakers and athlete role models

Facilities and Fixtures 

Our pupils have access to excellent facilities, including: 

• The Goldenacre sports ground (rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics and tennis) 

• Our on-site Centre for Sport and Exercise, with games hall, fitness suite and dance studio 

• A dedicated rowing boathouse on the Union Canal 

We offer a full calendar of competitive fixtures, regular training, and 23 different extra-curricular sport and wellbeing activities — ensuring every pupil can be active, involved and inspired.
