The Computing Department at Heriot’s has pulled together some information of courses which could be helpful for any pupil to take advantage of if time allows. The courses listed below are not compulsory, but may be beneficial to anyone looking to some more Computer Science activities.

Amazon Future Engineer
With many schools closed due to COVID-19, Amazon Future Engineer is helping to meet students’ needs by launching a free virtual coding programme – in partnership with Fire Tech. Available for students, teachers and parents for two months from 3 April to 3 June 2020, these resources cater for students aged 12 to 17 to help build computer science skills for students learning at home. Access 20 hours of free content, these resources use a Python Programming Platform, exploring ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ themes, plus a moderated forum and handy FAQs. Students can earn experience points for completing the work and earn badges when they unlock skills.
Virtual Cyber School
Aged 13-18? Join our Virtual Cyber School, in partnership with HM Government, where you will gain access to CyberStart Game until 31st August 2020.
Whether you’re already a white-hat hacker in training or you’ve never touched a keyboard before, you can join our online Virtual Cyber School.
With your free CyberStart Game licence, you’ll be able to explore and have a go at over 200 online cyber security challenges. Learn how to crack codes, find security flaws and dissect criminals’ digital trails whilst playing as a cyber agent in our Cyber Protection Agency.
You will learn the essential concepts and ideas cyber agents apply when dealing with the aftermath of real cyber attacks.
CyberFirst Courses
CyberFirst summer courses are now moving online! From June to August you can join one of their two week courses which include instructor-led classes using NCSC certified content and live guest speakers from industry. Courses are free and open to age 14-17 but you must register asap – these courses are popular!

As many schools are closed over the next few weeks, Stemettes are joining you online – to keep you inspired, motivated and learning. Each week we’ll run 3 events across Zoom, Youtube Live and Instagram.
