Black History Month

Black History Month – a snapshot of what’s been going on at Heriot’s

October marked Black History Month. It began as a way of remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora and our pupils enjoy learning about these topics as they progress through Senior School.

The start of Black History month was marked with a school assembly that featured Dr Jessica Harris, culinary historian, who’s bespoke address to Senior School pupils was very inspiring and thought-provoking.

Pupils have watched various clips during registration classes to learn about people’s lives and experiences, one of the clips featured was the BBC Scotland programme ‘Black and Scottish’. Another clip ‘The Story is the future‘ from BBC Sport celebrated Black History month – the pupils found out about ways sport is committing to addressing racism and promoting equality.

Two S4 Pupils – Kuzamium and Kenzie – delivered a fantastic presentation at Senior School Assembly to help pupils understand more about Black History Month.

Displays have gone up all around the school and feature commitments from every pupil from S1-5 as they learnt about Black History Month in their Citizenship lessons. These detail commitments we can make to address racism.

The month ended with S2 having a zoom call with Vineet Lal, School Governor and former pupil, as part of their work marking Black History Month. Vineet joined S2 to answer questions about the legacy of his mother, Saroj Lal, and his own experiences of promoting an equal and fair society.

Well done to everyone involved and a huge thank you to all of our wonderful speakers, allowing us all to think about the steps we can take to promote equality.
