The British Biology Olympiad

The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) challenges and motivates students with an interest in biology. The competition allows students to demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving abilities and our learners are tested on unfamiliar material from different (non-SQA) syllabi. Therefore, the excellent results of the S6 Advanced Higher cohort are even more impressive. This year, 9520 students took part in the competition from 668 schools worldwide.

Top award in GHS goes to Callum Williams who achieved a Silver Medal – only 6.2% of the entrants achieved at this level – an outstanding result from Callum.

Congratulations also to Rona Smith who achieved a Bronze Medal – only achieved by 9.9% of the total entrants – another fantastic achievement for Rona.

We also wish to congratulate (in order of results) Alice Warren, Jake Greenbank, Kimberly Zou, Michelle Blaikie, Medha Sridhar Rao, Alex Currie, Tara Verden-Anderson and Abigail Woodcock – who were all Highly Commended.

Olivia Brindle, Caitlin Greenlees and Eilidh Redpath were all Commended – only 17.1% of entrants achieved at this level.

We wish to congratulate all students who took part and are delighted that everyone who participated is now eligible to a free year of BioNet membership, which provides them with electronic subscription to The Biologist magazine and e-newsletters featuring bioscience-related news and events.
