Reflecting the school’s 400-year history, Heriot’s has a large collection of records, artefacts, artwork/photographs, and memorabilia dating back to the early 17th century.
George Heriot’s School is a core part of Scotland’s history and, as such, the Heriot’s archives hold national significance. Collections are held by the School, the National Records of Scotland, Historic Environment Scotland and the National Museums Scotland. Although we are not able to grant open access to the public, we try to assist with all enquiries. To aid in your research, please note:
Pre-1886 records. The school holds basic school records for this time. A chronological record of boys educated at George Heriot’s Hospital and School (1659-1902) is available to view at the National Records of Scotland (Reference GD421/10/7). Please check the National Records of Scotland website regarding access to their search rooms.
George Heriot’s Trust collection of building plans and photographs is available via Trove (part of Historic Environment Scotland).
In line with The National Archives and the Advisory Council advice, The Heriot’s Archives operates a 100-year closure rule to ensure that there is minimal risk of the unfair release of personal data during an individual’s lifetime. Individuals, upon proof of identification, can of course access their personal information held in the archive.
