When George Heriot created the George Heriot Trust in 1624, he passed on his family motto, I distribute chearfullie.
For 400 years, this motto has been the glue that binds Herioters together and one which, as part of the school crest, is sewn onto every school blazer. At the heart of school is the desire to help others and to give back, to support those in need with kindness.
Today the school’s charitable purpose is fronted by our force for good initiative, which seeks to focus effort on widening access, on supporting chosen charities and by encouraging all pupils to distribute chearfullie. The transformative power of education which Heriot enabled by setting up a school to educate the fatherless bairns of Edinburgh, has run for 400 years, educating over 100,000 boys and girls through the Trust Out Schools in Edinburgh during the 1800’s and continuing today with our support for Foundation and Bursary pupils. Giving back is an established behaviour in school, with charitable endeavour forming a key strand of pupil activity outside the classroom.
