Junior and Senior School Libraries

George Heriot’s School benefits from having both a junior and a senior school library on site. The Junior School Library is situated in the Old Building, while the Senior School Library is located in the school hall building.

Aims of the School Libraries

  • Support and enhance learning across the school
  • Provide a safe, secure environment for pupils to study, carry out research and personal reading
  • Provide a wide range of relevant, up-to-date books and digital resources that support Curriculum for Excellence
  • To develop a lifelong love of reading by providing a wide range of fiction genres and recreational non-fiction
  • Provide education texts to support teaching colleagues’ professional development
  • Provide information and research skills lessons to develop independent learners, and assist pupils and staff with research queries.

Library Opening hours

  • Monday to Thursday 8am to 4.30pm
  • Friday 8am to 4pm


The Library provides a wide range of resources including:

  • Fiction
  • Non-fiction (including textbooks and past papers)
  • Desktop and laptop computers
  • Printing and photocopying facilities
  • Daily newspapers
  • Weekly and monthly magazines and journals
  • Careers section
  • Digital resources


The Library participates in the Kids' Lit Quiz, author events and book awards. Information regarding events is published in the school bulletin.
