There will be provision for regular Saturday morning Rugby and Hockey matches and practices. Optional extra practice for both activities will be introduced after the start of the session, running until 3.30pm.
Rugby (girls) would introduce the activity to a female only group. The focus will be on skill development and introducing them to the different aspects of the game. The amount of contact involved will depend on the experience and nature of the group. For this activity to run we need a minimum of 12 pupils to make it a worthwhile experience for all. If there are not enough pupils for this to run, the girls will have the option to participate with the boys throughout Upper Primary, should they wish.
Cross-country is introduced as a games option in primary 6. If your young person would like to experience this ahead of P6 please see SOCS for extra-curricular cross-country events and practices.

Adventure Skills – this will take place at a number of venues and will include activities such a survival skills (e.g shelter building), team-building exercises, navigation, hill-walking and outward-bound activities. Pupils are asked to wear clothing appropriate for the outdoors.

Curling – this takes place at Murrayfield Ice Rink and provides coaching for beginners as well as those who have played before. Pupils also have the chance to compete for the school. The curlers will be transported to Murrayfield Ice rink by school minibus and dismissed from there after the session.
Dance – this takes place in the Dance Studio with a specialist and incorporates a number of different dance styles and fun routines for all.
Rowing takes place on the Union Canal. The GHSBC boathouse is located off Colinton Road near Meggetland Sports Pavilion. S3 pupils get an introduction to rowing and rowing training, both on and off the water.
There will be provision for regular Saturday morning practices. There is also provision for indoor training Monday pre-school 7:30-8:30am and Wednesday after school from 3:30-5pm at School Sports Centre. In the summer there will be an opportunity for some to race at local and national events.
Numbers in Rowing are capped to maintain a safe environment. Pupils who miss out will also have the option to attend extra-curricular recreational rowing to try, learn or row recreationally.

We run Badminton over two sites. Pupils who wish to play competitive Badminton for the school will practice at the School Sports Hall. Pupils who play recreational Badminton will be based at the Edinburgh University Pleasance Sports Centre. Pupils will be dismissed at 4pm.
Boxing Fitness will take place at the School Sports Centre and adjoining area and caters for all levels of ability. Pupils will learn boxing technique through bag and mitt work as well are box fit exercises. Pupils will not engage in sparing or need a mouth guard.
Climbing – this games option is open to any pupil in S4-6 who wishes to develop their rock-climbing skills. The aim is to improve climbing technique as well as learn the technical skill to be a safe and competent climber. Beginners and experienced climbers welcome. This will take place at the Edinburgh University Centre for Sport and Exercise. Pupils will change at the GHS Sports Centre and walk to the Pleasance through the Cowgate.

Curling – this takes place at Murrayfield Ice Rink and provides coaching for beginners as well as those who have played before. Pupils also have the chance to compete for the school. The curlers will be transported to Murrayfield Ice rink by school minibus and dismissed from there after the session.
Dance – this takes place in the Raeburn Gym with our dance specialist and incorporates a number of different dance styles and fun routines for all.
HIIT Fitness will take place in the School Fitness Suite and adjoining area and caters for all fitness interests and abilities. This will be a teacher lead workout that involves intervals of cardiovascular work followed by intervals of body weight/resistance training.
Lacrosse takes place on the grass at Goldenacre with the possibility of a small number of mid-week fixtures available.
Pilates is a method of strengthening the body through core and postural exercises to improve general fitness and well-being.
Rowing takes place on the Union Canal. The GHSBC boathouse is located off of Colinton Road near Meggetland Sports Pavilion. During these years there are more opportunities to train.
There will be provision for regular Thursday evening and Saturday morning team practices. There is also be provision for regular indoor training most of which takes place 7:30-8:30am and after school from 3:30-5:30pm at school sports centre. There are opportunities to race at local and national events and some may have the opportunity to trial for international selection.

Pupils will also be expected to pass a swimming test at the Royal Commonwealth Pool at the commencement of the session.
