Orienteering News

A team of S3 boys (Angus Ivory, Tomas MacDonald, Amius Marshall De-Ath , Eunus Rehman and Tommy Thin) are just back from Otepaa in Estonia, where they represented George Heriot's School, and Scotland, in the 2019 ISF World School Championships in Orienteering , this May.

More than 800 young orienteers from 23 countries took part in the event, which involved long and middle distance events, as well as a unique friendship relay- where the boys were teamed up with boys and girls from other countries to compete in multi-national teams. The GHS team was placed 8th in the long distance, which is a significant achievement. Angus Ivory also gained individual success in the long distance race, where he was placed 4th .

The Championships gave the boys a unique opportunity to explore Estonia, make friends and compete with other young sportsmen from all around the world. A particular highlight was the Cultural Evening, where the boys , attired in GHS kilts lent by the Pipe Band, performed the Dashing White Sergeant, and offered Scottish delicacies, such as Irn Bru and tablet to competitors from other nations.

The boys raised a substantial amount of money themselves (nearly £2000) to fund the trip, through selling their own baking at numerous orienteering and GHS school sports events, and through generous sponsorship from Interlopers Orienteering Club, and East Scotland Orienteering Association, so would like to thank everyone for their support.
