Winter Games Options 14-15

P5 Winter Games Options

  • Rugby (boys) - this will take place on their Monday games afternoon at Goldenacre from 2-3pm. There is also provision for occasional competitive weekday and weekend matches and Saturday morning practices.
  • Hockey (girls) - this will take place on their Monday games afternoon at Goldenacre from 2-3pm. There is also provision for Saturday morning practices.
  • Cross-country - this will take place on their Monday games afternoon in the Meadows from 2-3pm and caters for all running abilities. Pupils will be dismissed from the main school campus at Lauriston Place.

P6 Winter Games Options

  • Rugby (boys) - this will take place on their Tuesday games afternoon at Goldenacre from 2-3pm. There is also provision for regular competitive weekend matches on a Saturday morning and optional extra practices added onto their games afternoon.

  • Badminton - this will take place in the main hall at the Sports Centre
  • Cross-country - this will take place in the Meadows and caters for all running abilities. There is also the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular cross-country and competitions.

S2 Winter Games Options

  • Rugby (boys) - this will take place at Goldenacre with their extra team practice on a Tuesday after school. There is also provision for weekend matches.
  • Hockey (girls) - this will take place at Goldenacre with their extra team practice on a Tuesday after school. There is also provision for weekend matches.
  • Badminton - this will take place in the main hall at the Sports Centre
  • Cross-country - this will take place in the Meadows and caters for all running abilities. There is also the opportunity to take part in extra-curricular cross-country and competitions.

S3 Winter Games Options

  • Rugby (boys) - this will take place at Goldenacre with their extra team practice on a Wednesday after school. There is also provision for weekend matches.
  • Hockey (girls) - this will take place at Goldenacre with their extra team practice on a Wednesday after school. There is also provision for weekend matches.
  • Rowing - this will take place on the canal at Meggetland
  • Dance - this will take place in the Dance Studio this will take place in the Dance Studio with a mix of dance styles from Thriller to Chicago to Bollywood
  • Cross-country - this will take place in the Meadows
  • Adventure Skills - this will take place at a variety of venues and is capped at a maximum of 14 pupils. It involves Mountain Boarding, Archery and Survival Skills.

S4-6 Winter Games Options

  • Rugby (boys) - this will take place at Goldenacre with the extra practice day on a Thursday after school. There is also provision for weekend matches.
  • Hockey (girls) - this will take place at Goldenacre with the extra practice day on a Thursday after school. There is also provision for weekend matches.

  • Cross-country - this takes place at the Meadows
  • Adventure Skills - this will take place at a number of venues and will include activities like navigation skills, camp craft and survival skills.
  • Rock Climbing - This takes place at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena at Ratho until October/November (until it gets cooler) then it moves to Alien Rock at Granton which is indoors. Pupils will progress to become self-certified climbers initially and then develop their climbing skills and technique using bouldering, top rope climbing and lead climbing, with some outdoor climbing also a possibility. (this will not run in the session 2015-16 while staff are receiving training for climbing)
  • Pilates - this will take place in the PE Classroom; please see Ms Mackie for more information
  • Dance - this will take place in the Dance Studio with a mix of dance styles from Thriller to Chicago to Bollywood
  • Curling - this will take place at Murrayfield Ice Rink; please see Mrs Lydon or Mrs Hart for more information
  • Fencing - A real challenge! Fencing requires discipline, phycical fitness, mental dexterity and the ability to be both cool and creative under pressure.  George Heriot's has a tradition of success at this unique sport.  The games option take place on Tuesdays from 14:35 -1525 in the Old Gym, see Mrs. Lippok for more information
  • Fitness - this will take place in the School Fitness Suite with placed capped at 24. Names will be drawn out of the hat if the activity is oversubscribed so please have an idea of a second activity that you would like to do (not Adventure Skills or Rowing).
  • Competitive Badminton - this will take place in the main Sports Hall
  • Recreational Badminton - this will take place at the Crags Sports Centre
  • Lacrosse (girls) - this is an introduction to the game, it's skills and an opportunity to place. It will take place at Goldenacre (4pm finish; with the possibility of running an extra practice is girls are keen)
