Covid-19 Bursarial Aid

Foreword from the Bursar

Whilst there now appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel, with vaccinations continuing apace and easing of lockdown restrictions being discussed, it remains important to the School that it continues to support the families worst affected by the economic impact of the pandemic.  As we progress through the 2020/21 Session, the School is continuing to follow its established three-pronged approach to supporting the Heriot’s community.

  • Firstly, we are offering parents the opportunity to spread fees over an extended period if families continue to be affected financially by the pandemic. Please contact the Bursar on CEBA@george-heriots.comshould you wish to investigate this option further.
  • Secondly, we are continuing the Covid-19 Emergency Bursarial Aid (“CEBA”) scheme, which will offer support with the Summer Term fees to the most affected parents. This will be run in one application process, opening on the 1st of March, with applications closing on the 15th of March.
  • Thirdly, we will continue the support available to existing parents through our traditional Bursary scheme.

CEBA Details – Summer 2021

To provide emergency financial assistance to families that have experienced a significant reduction in their family income, affecting their ability to pay the 2021 Summer Term school fees, as a result of the current Covid-19 pandemic. 2021 Summer Term fees cover the April to June 2021 monthly fees.

CEBA is available to parents/guardians of all pupils at George Heriot’s School, irrespective of year group.  Parents/Guardians may make a claim for all children they have as pupils at George Heriot’s.  For the avoidance of doubt, the scheme is open to parents and guardians who currently also receive support through the existing annual Bursary scheme and for parents and guardians of new pupils who joined in August 2020.

It will be appreciated that the school has limited funds available and we would ask that applications are submitted only when other options have been explored.  This will enable us to target funds at those in the Heriot’s community who are most in need of our support and have been significantly affected by the current pandemic.

Assessment Criteria

In assessing the level of support to be provided, the following factors will be taken into consideration:

  • The magnitude of the change in the family’s financial circumstances and new level of ongoing earnings.
  • Level of ongoing income and support available for the family from the Government to supplement lost income.
  • The speed with which the family’s income will recover following the relaxation or end of the current social distancing measures.
  • Current savings and capital, over a minimum level.

Awards will be available to cover between 25% and 100% of the Summer Term school fees.  The level of support will be assessed by the Governors’ Bursaries Committee.

The Bursary will provide support for the Summer Term, being April to June 2021.

Change in Circumstance

We would ask parents whose circumstances change and who find they are in a position to pay all or even a portion of the fees, to let the School know.  This might include Government expansion of its support (such as the extension of the existing furlough scheme), a family’s income recovering quicker than expected, or support for school fees received from an alternative source.  This will enable us to support additional families affected by the pandemic.

Applications for CEBA will open at 9am on the 1st of March and close at midnight on the 15th of March.  We would expect to be able to confirm any bursary awarded by the 30th of March, in advance of the School closing for the Easter holidays.  If there are any changes to these dates, this will be confirmed to all parents through School Post.
