Every Herioter knows that their school was founded in 1628. However, it was not until 1659 that the first pupils arrived - the 40 boys who comprised that first cohort of Foundationers. The 31 years between the laying of the foundation stone and opening of the Old Building's doors are a tale of a lengthy building project, financial challenges and the effects of the Civil War. An intriguing chapter, but it is of secondary importance to the milestone which was reached when Heriot's Hospital was 'wes dedicat in a very soleme maner' [sic] at a service in Greyfriars Kirk on 27 June 1659.
So it is that session 2009-2010 marks 350 years of education at Heriot's. The celebrations of the 350 Year Anniversary are now under way - details can be found by selecting from the menu on the left.
