Trips and Visits

This session, six S2 pupils are taking part in a 10 week challenge on waste minimisation designed by Go4SET, a new EDT (Engineering Design Technology) initiative, to encourage more S2s to think of an engineering career.  As part of the challenge, pupils are advised by an industry mentor and our pupils were very fortunate to have been teamed with John- Robert Eunson, an offshore worker, from BP.  One of their contributions is to provide an industry visit, which involved taking the boys to the BP office in Dyce.

O
n Thursday 28 January 2010 the pupils set off, along with a team from St Georges, to Aberdeen with the first stop being the Maritime museum.  Pupils were informed of the history of the oil industry and even saw a scale model of a platform within the museum building.  On the second day, pupils were taken to the BP offices at Dyce where they learned about the decommissioning of the North West Hutton platform which resulted in 97% of the structure being recycled.  Pupils were also treated to a 3D interactive tour of oil exploration and discovered how the industry dominates the North Sea.  They then had an online conversation with a controller on the Schiehallion FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading system).  As a special treat the pupils were taken to the Bond heliport going through check in, learning about the necessity of survival suits and how the operation works from the control room.

The pupils involved were Edward Ayton, Ian Hume, Cameron Nash, Sam Pagan, Sandy Steven and Calum Young and they would like to thank John Robert and Warren Millward for organising this fantastic trip and to all at BP for facilitating it.
