Full Colours Specific Criteria
(Cumulative criteria or special considerations appear in parenthesis)
Athletics (1 and 2)
- Competed for the school at District or National Level.
- Commitment to Heriot's Athletics.
Badminton
- A high standard of competition. Representation in Edinburgh team or above.
Chess (1, 2 3 and 4)
- Regular membership of the School's four player chess A-team.
- Considerable success (measured according to the standard of opposition) in A-team matches.
- Membership of Chess Scotland.
- Play at least four competitive Chess Scotland matches and maintain an average grade of at least 1000 during the relevant session.
Combined Cadet Force (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
- Advanced APC (Army/RAF Proficiency Certificate).
- Competition Shoot: First Class level both Full and Small Bore.
- Adventure Training Course (CCAT).
- BTEC First Diploma in public services (Merit level or above).
- At least six months of CCF time as an SNCO (Senior Non-Commissioned Officer).
Cricket (1 and 2)
- One full season in the first X1.
- Of a standard to be eligible for District and /or National selection during the season.
Cross Country Running (1 and any two from 2, 3, 4)
- Queen's Park lap in under 19m 0s (Boys) or under 20m 30s (Girls).
- Sevenoaks top 100 placing - Boys (or equivalent - Girls).
- Scottish Schools' Championships top 40% in either Group B or Group A.
- Eastern District League or equivalent Scottish Athletics Open Race top 50% placing.
Curling (1, 2 and 3)
- Regular member of first rink.
- Playing to standard deemed high enough by the coach. To be of a level that would put them in the top 10 school curlers in Scotland.
- Achievement by the rink in the various tournaments open to them. An excellent performance in the league is essential, (generally reaching the final) backed up by some other good results. However, one excellent player in an otherwise average team may be awarded colours at the coach's discretion.
Debating (1 or 2)
- Selection for Scotland.
- A win in one of the big four Debating competitions or in a British one day competition.
Drama (1, 2, 3 and 4)
- Excellence in performance.
- Participation in at least 6 productions including Drama Festival and/ or House Drama and associated activities plus selection for special events (e.g. SSF & NT).
- Participation should show ongoing commitment to the furtherance of Drama in the school.
- Helping in a non-performing capacity on at least one production (through to production nights).
Equestrian
- Champion or Reserve Champion at the Scottish Schools Dressage & Showing Jumping Championships.
Fencing (1, 2, 3 or 4. Special consideration 5)
- A medal place 1/2/3 in the Scottish Secondary Schools Individual Fencing Championships.
- A medal place 1/2/3 in the UK Public Schools Championships.
- A medal place 1/2/3 in any of the events held throughout the UK during the fencing season between August and May.
- A medal place 1/2/3 in the final overall. Youth Development Series (5 rounds).
- A member of the Scottish Youth Squad and selection to represent Scotland in any UK International match during that season.
Football (1 and 2)
- A regular player in the first eleven.

- Boys: the player is of at least Edinburgh/SISFA East of Scotland standard, though circumstances may mean he has not been selected to play for Edinburgh/SISFA East of Scotland.
- Girls: regional selection, playing at club level or adjudged to be capable of playing at club level.
Golf (1 and 2)
- Reached or exceeded Edinburgh Schools' Standard (or equivalent).
- Have a National Handicap in single figures.
Hockey
Excellence of Performance in terms of:
- Representative Honours - a player should have played at National U/16 or National/District U/18 level.
- Consistently strong performances in the school 1st XI where players should be playing at a district standard.
Music
- Technical/musical excellence
Associated Board Grade VII must have been passed on first instrument. - A minimum of two years service to at least three choirs/ensembles within Heriot's.
Piping
1. Technical/musical excellence
(a) Level 3 certificate from the Piping & Drumming Qualifications Board or equivalent standard.
(b) Instruct a beginner in the playing of all embellishments on the practice chanter.
(c) Play for the following Highland Dances:
(i) The Highland Fling
(ii) Seann Truibhas
(iii) The Reel of Tulloch
(iv) The Single Sword Dance
or
2. Represent the School in a Piobaireachd competition at a National level e.g. The Scottish Schools CCF Piobaireachd Competition. (first award only)
Public Speaking
- A win in a National Public-Speaking competition
Quiz Team (1 and 2)
A colours award should go to those pupils who have been members of the Senior Quiz Team which has become:
- Scottish Champions
- North of Britain Champions, thus qualifying them for the UK final of the "Schools Challenge"
Rowing (1, 2 or 3)
- Top three finish at British Championships, National Schools' Regatta or British Schools' Head of the River Race.
- A win, J16 or above, at the Scottish Championships or the Scottish Schools' Head of the River.
- Scottish or GB Squad.
Rugby (1 and 2)
- Two full playing season's in the school 1st XV
- District or National representation
Shooting (1, 2 and 3)
- Above average ability: consistently high scoring maintained over a period of time.
- Organisational skills: prepare and run a competition in all aspects - setting up, scoring and organising teams.
- Ability to coach: the personality to be able to coach younger pupils and pass on enthusiasm. Attendance at courses of practical and theoretical skill.
Skiing (1, 2, 3 and 4)
- Represent the national team/British Childrens' Team in skiing.
- Top 10 Scottish Schools Individual
- Top 20 British Schools
- Individual as part of the team to be placed in top 3 in Scottish Schools Championships
Swimming
All Colour holders must be able to swim 200yds I.M. in 2 mins 30 secs (boys); 2 mins 40 secs (girls) and reach 100 points.
