The aim of the Heriot's Rowing Club, one of the premier school boat clubs in the country, is to provide our youngsters with the opportunity to participate and excel at rowing and sculling in a safe and enjoyable environment. Apart from the obvious health benefits, rowing develops great team spirit and an ability to work together found in few other sports. The demands of the training, particularly at senior level, require self discipline, time management and motivation; skills that can be put to good use in the classroom and in life beyond Heriot's. The Rowing Club trains and races all year round, putting two or three crews from each year group on the water. Local races take place roughly every fortnight, offering the chance for our crews to pit themselves against pupils from other clubs and schools. Later on in the season, national regattas take place, notably the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham, and the pinnacle of any rower's career, Henley Royal Regatta. The school makes good use of its Union Canal Boathouse in Edinburgh and the National Rowing Academy through in Glasgow.
